What Makes Something Alive?
A sealed box with a pebble, a mushroom, a seed, and a small wind-up toy sits on a shelf. Which of these are alive — and how can you tell?
A simple classroom investigation
Start with the mystery box: pebble, mushroom cap, dry bean seed, and a wind-up toy. Put the seed in a moist paper towel and leave the mushroom and pebble on a shelf. Wind the toy and let it run. Observe over several days. The toy moves only when you wind it. The pebble never changes. The seed, if kept moist and warm, may swell and send out a tiny root and shoot. The mushroom cap may become dry and crumbly, or if it was attached to a living fungus it might be just a part of a larger organism. This short, real-world observation sets up a question scientists ask: which objects show the kinds of activities biologists use to decide “alive”? We won’t yet look inside organisms or study cells — that comes in later lessons. Right now, the investigation focuses on visible actions and changes you can measure or test.
How scientists decide if something is alive
Biologists use a handful of reliable signs to judge life. Each sign alone isn't always enough, but together they form a strong conclusion. - Organization: Living things are made of parts arranged in orderly ways (for now, think "has parts that work together"). - Energy use: Living things take in energy and use it to grow, move, or repair themselves. Plants use sunlight; animals eat food. - Growth and development: Living things change over time in predictable ways — seeds sprout into seedlings; animals grow larger or mature. - Response to the environment: Living things react to light, heat, touch, or chemicals (a plant bends toward light; an animal withdraws from pain). - Reproduction: Living things make more of their kind, either by producing offspring or releasing spores or seeds. - Internal balance: Living systems keep internal conditions relatively stable (like temperature or moisture) even when the surroundings change. When you test the mystery box items, check several of these signs. The wind-up toy moves but does not use energy from the environment in a living way, does not grow, and cannot reproduce. The seed, by contrast, can use stored energy, grow, and later reproduce. Some items (like parts of fungi) can look alive but are parts of a larger living system; careful observation or tests help sort that out. Scientists also note that a few borderline cases (discussed much later) require special study.
Everyday checks you can try at home
You can run quick checks that demonstrate the life signs above. - Growth test: Keep a seed moist and watch for swelling and a shoot over days. Record measurements to show change. - Response test: Put a potted plant near a window and one in a dark cupboard. Over days, the window plant bends toward light — a clear response. - Energy test: Compare a warm-blooded animal (or a small pet) active after eating versus one that hasn’t eaten; energy intake affects activity. For plants, cover a leaf with black paper for several days and compare how it looks to uncovered leaves (photosynthesis requires light). - Reproduction check: Notice whether a plant makes seeds after flowering, or whether a mushroom releases spores (often visible as a powdery dust under a cap). This may take more time but is a key life sign. These hands-on checks help you decide if something is alive without microscopes or special tools. Record what passes more than one test; that combination makes your conclusion stronger. Remember: some items may pass one test but fail others, which is why scientists look for multiple life signs.
Putting the investigation together
A short investigation — watching a seed, a mushroom part, a pebble, and a toy — teaches a practical rule: life is identified by a combination of activities, not a single feature. Look for organization, energy use, growth, response to the environment, reproduction, and internal balance. Items that only move because of an outside force or that show just one feature are not strong evidence on their own.
This lesson focuses on visible tests you can do without special equipment. In later lessons you will study what happens inside living things (cells and their parts) to explain why these life signs occur, but for now, practice using multiple simple checks to decide if something is alive.
