How does your body notice something and make a quick response?
Quick idea: What the nervous system does
The nervous system collects information from inside and outside your body, sends that information as electrical signals, and produces responses. Receptors in sense organs (eyes, ears, skin, tongue, nose) detect stimuli. The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) interprets signals and tells muscles or glands what to do. This lesson focuses on how signals travel and how fast reflexes differ from deliberate actions. Note: you already learned about the heart and lungs—those systems receive nervous signals to change speed, but we won't re-teach their functions here.
How a nerve signal travels (simple pathway)
Signals move along specialized cells called neurons. A typical path for sensing and responding follows a clear order:
- Stimulus hits a receptor (e.g., heat on the skin). Sensory neuron carries the electrical signal toward the CNS. CNS (spinal cord or brain) processes the message. Motor neuron carries commands away to an effector (muscle or gland). Effector acts (muscle pulls away, gland releases a chemical).
Inside a neuron and where signals jump
A neuron has dendrites (receive input), a cell body (processes), and an axon (sends output). The electrical impulse travels down the axon and crosses tiny gaps called synapses to reach the next cell. Chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) carry the message across the synapse. These steps let signals move quickly but not instantly—more neurons and more synapses usually mean slower overall transmission.
Reflexes versus conscious responses
Reflexes are automatic, fast actions that often use only the spinal cord. Conscious responses travel to the brain for interpretation and can be changed by thought or learning. Compare:
- Reflex: Touch a hot pan → sensory neuron → spinal cord → motor neuron → pull hand back (happens before you feel pain fully). Conscious: See a problem, think about options, then choose how to act (involves brain processing and sometimes learning or memory).
Putting it together
The nervous system turns information into action by moving electrical signals through neurons and across synapses. Remember the basic route: receptor → sensory neuron → CNS → motor neuron → effector.
Knowing the difference between reflexes and conscious responses helps you predict speed and control: reflexes protect you quickly, while brain processing allows flexible choices.
