What resilience means in an ecosystem
Resilience is not just “surviving.” It’s about maintaining essential functions (like growing plants, recycling nutrients, and moving energy through food chains) after a disturbance such as drought, a storm, or the arrival of a new species. A resilient system bounces back so people, animals, and plants still get the services they depend on.
How biodiversity supports resilience
Different species often do similar jobs or respond differently to the same stress. Those differences create backup systems and flexible responses that help the whole ecosystem keep working.
- Redundancy: several species can perform the same role (e.g., many pollinators), so if one declines another can help. Response diversity: species respond in different ways to the same disturbance (some tolerate drought, others recover fast), so some parts keep working. Keystone and unique roles: a single species can have a large effect; losing it can harm resilience even in diverse systems. Genetic diversity: variety within a species helps populations adapt to new conditions (disease, temperature shifts).
A short real-world comparison
Imagine two nearby fields hit by a dry summer. Field A is a monoculture (one crop). Field B has grasses, wildflowers, and several types of legumes and insects. After the drought:
- Field B likely keeps more plant cover because some species are drought-tolerant. Pollinators and soil microbes in Field B continue to support plant regrowth and seed set. Field A may collapse if its single species is affected, so soil erosion or weed invasion can follow.
