Matter is recycled, not destroyed
Every living thing is built from matter — atoms of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and more. Those atoms don't disappear when an organism dies, and new atoms aren't created to build a growing plant. Instead, the same atoms move from one living thing to another, then to the soil and air, and eventually into a new living thing again. A tree pulls carbon atoms from the air as it grows; when it falls and rots, those same atoms are released back into the soil and air, ready to become part of a mushroom, a beetle, or the next tree. This is why matter in an ecosystem is described as cycling: it loops through living things again and again instead of running out.
Decomposers unlock matter trapped in dead material
Fungi, bacteria, and detritivores such as earthworms and pill bugs are the decomposers that make recycling possible. They feed on dead leaves, fallen wood, and animal waste, breaking complex molecules into simpler ones. Without decomposers, dead material would just pile up, and the carbon, nitrogen, and minerals locked inside it would stay trapped and unusable. As decomposers break down that material, they release nutrients into the soil — nitrogen compounds, minerals, and carbon dioxide — in forms that plant roots and other organisms can absorb. A single rotting log can support thousands of decomposers at once, and the nutrients they release are what make the soil around it richer for new plants.
The carbon cycle connects all living things
Carbon shows this looping most clearly. Plants pull carbon dioxide out of the air during photosynthesis and use it to build sugars, leaves, and wood. Animals get that same carbon by eating plants or other animals. All organisms release some of it back into the air as carbon dioxide when they respire, and decomposers release the rest when they break down dead material. That carbon dioxide re-enters the air, ready for the next plant to capture again. Matter keeps moving through this loop indefinitely — but energy does not. Every time an organism uses food for energy, some of it escapes as heat and cannot be recaptured, which is why ecosystems constantly need new energy from the Sun even though they reuse the same matter over and over.
Matter loops, energy doesn't
The fallen tree from the opening question never truly vanishes. Decomposers slowly take it apart, and its carbon, nitrogen, and minerals rejoin the soil and air, ready to build the next generation of plants, fungi, and animals. This is the quiet, ongoing work that keeps forests, fields, and every other ecosystem supplied with the raw materials of life.
It helps to keep matter and energy separate in your mind: matter cycles endlessly through living things and their environment, but energy only flows through once before dissipating as heat. That difference is why an ecosystem can reuse the same carbon atoms for millions of years, yet still depends on fresh sunlight arriving every single day.
