L19. Daily Japanese Kanji — Lesson 19
Days 11-20
R-report
[Day 19] 男 - man
The kanji 男 originally combines 田 (rice field) over 力 (power/force) and came to mean “man” — historically associating physical strength and farm labor with men. Today 男 is used for everyday words meaning man, male, and related terms (e.g., 男の子, 男性). Readings: On'yomi (used mainly in compounds) and Kun'yomi (native Japanese reading) are both common; example compounds include 男性(だんせい / dansei) and 男の子(おとこのこ / otokonoko)。 Mnemonic tip: Picture a farmer (田) using his strength (力) — a traditional image to remember “man.”
Readings
On'yomi: **ダン/ナン** (dan / nan) Kun'yomi: **おとこ** (otoko)
